Mixed media
The beauty, benefits and concerns inherent in living close to the natural world crystallize at our remote home in Central British Columbia. Our home provides endless delights for my wandering eye and collector’s basket. In my studio, plaster on panel base supports botanical and organic specimens. Materials incorporated in my artwork include earth and ashes, grasses and feathers, stones and animal bones. These are juxtaposed with human artifacts “found” beneath an overgrown tangle of brush at forest’s edge. Each found object triggers an exploration into its individual characteristics and history and into the natural surround in which it was discovered. Mark making and layers of pigmented glazes and washes unify the impressionistic and tactile pieces. The joy of discovery enhances my efforts to reclaim, recycle and reassemble diverse elements in these mixed media works. I hope they will jostle the viewer into noticing his/her juxtaposition to both the works of art and to the world at large.
