I
I travel to the ‘edge’ internally and externally. Excursions/work in Canada’s High Arctic (1988, 1991), to the Antarctic Peninsula (1999), and to Nunavut and Greenland (2006) have changed my life. Previous selections of my polar artworks have been exhibited in solo exhibits in Quesnel, Smithers, Vancouver and Wells, B.C. as well as in Antofagasta, Chile.
Following a 2006 polar journey I began developing a series, “Polar Perspectives”. In 2009, new Arctic oil paintings are emerging. In the company of others, I am concerned about worldwide influences upon polar populations. “Impact I” was created using acrylic paint to convey impressionistic images of Arctic shifting light and form. Superimposed on the canvas is a kayak: an indicator of the change inherent in Inuit life. While painting this piece I wrestled with my perceptions and emotions. Images swirled of light and life-filled landscape, narwhal’s stilled eyes as hunter offered careful instruction to gathered children, Thule tent rings nestled upon trampled tundra, re-enactments of eroded culture, uncertainty, loss….. “Impact I” was exhibited in Toronto, Canada (2007) and is selected for “Pulse”, a regional exhibit in Prince George, B.C. (2008).
